Carn Barrus - Samuel John Lamorna Birch R.A. (1869 - 1955)
Carn Barrus - Samuel John Lamorna Birch R.A. (1869 - 1955)

Birch was born in Cheshire but moved to the Lamorna Valley in Cornwall in 1892. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from that year and held his first one man exhibition at the Fine Art Society in 1906. The epithet "Lamorna" was given to him by Stanhope Forbes to distinguish him from Lionel Birch, another contemporary artist. Birch achieved wide acclaim in his lifetime, exhibiting over 200 works at the Royal Academy. This painting shows Birch at the height of his powers, depicting Carn Barrus near to Lamorna and demonstrating his mastery of light and mood. Fishermen on the rocks create a sense of scale and give definition to the composition. The words “Carn Barrus by Lamorna Birch ARA”  are written by Birch on the reverse of the original.
