G D Leslie is renowned for having established a category of painting in which feminine beauty played a major part. With the late 18th century as his favourite setting this sketch after Gainsborough typifies his style. On the back of the original is the inscription “Sketch after Gainsborough by Leslie R.A. May 1864”. He exhibited at the Royal Academy annually from 1857 to 1920.
